With temperatures falling, it's a great time to spend a leisurely day browsing for bargains. Our real estate agents always find unique items at these fascinating antique shops around Huntington County.
- Arts Station Antiques - 375 N. Main St., Suite A, Roanoke, IN 46783
Five years ago, graphic arts designer and Chicago resident Andi O'Briant moved back home to Roanoke to help her father Dave realize his lifelong dream. The result is Arts Station Antiques, which features items from the O'Briant family's collection and merchandise sold on consignment. Appropriately, the building itself is repurposed from a one-time gas station not far from Roanoke homes for sale, and the shop's name includes a shout-out to former owner Art Smith. Hours are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday.
- Whimzy - 45 Etna Ave., Huntington, IN 46750
As soon as you step through the front door, you'll see Whimzy definitely lives up to its name. With 25 different vendors under one roof, there's always something new and exciting to catch your eye. One piece recently on display was a sewing cabinet made by Caswell-Runyon, a business that operated near Huntington homes for sale for 50 years. Owners Rachel and Joe Zahm, who renovated the building that was the 40-year home of Southside Furniture, just celebrated the shop's first anniversary. Whimzy is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
- Antiqology - 401 N. Jefferson St., Huntington, IN 46750
Everything goes better with ice cream. Adam and Rebecca Hanson applied that principle to Antiqology, their concept for a combination antique shop and retro ice cream parlor. The Huntington County Visitor Bureau agreed, awarding the Hansons one year of free rent as winners of a contest for new businesses. Customers marvel at the wall behind the soda fountain, which is lined with more than 500 bottles of craft sodas, including Antiqology's own house brand. Hours are 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon - 7 p.m. Sunday.
- Paper Moon - 188 E. 2nd St., Roanoke, IN 36783
Just as the name suggests, a delightful air of nostalgia permeates Paper Moon. The shop carries an eclectic assortment of home decor, furniture, toys, accessories, and giftware, with new items mixed alongside antiques and vintage products. Be sure to check out the back room, which holds a selection of embroidered and tie-dyed women's clothing that owner Stephanie McKibben refers to as "free-spirited Bohemian style." Paper Moon is open 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon - 4 p.m. Sunday.
- Markle Exit 286 Antique Mall - 250 E. South St., Markle, IN 46770
Markle Exit 286 Antique Mall is billed as the "Wunderkammer on the Wabash." The German word, which translates to "wonder chamber," perfectly sums up this 30,000-square-foot collection with more than 100 vendors. Identical twin sisters Connie and Carol, owners since 2008, are themselves experienced antique dealers. The pair are frequently out shopping estate sales and auctions throughout the Midwest, looking for the most exciting items to bring back to the mall, which is just minutes from Markle homes for sale. Collectors of everything from books and posters to ceramics and glassware will find a number of must-have items. Hours are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily except Sunday when doors open at noon.
