Giving Gardens

Are you looking for a powerful way to help growing children feel more connected with the natural world this spring? Wondering how you can help them understand the cycle of "farm to table" that helps them make healthy eating choices? Our real estate agents know how important these topics are to so many of our clients.

If you're comparing great Columbia City homes for sale or homes elsewhere in the area, you have an amazing option: The Giving Gardens of Indiana. Giving Gardens is an urban farm that offers a variety of immersive educational programs where kids have the chance to "grow while growing."

Kids can learn to live in peace with the natural world in safe, age-appropriate excursions with groups of their peers, under the supervision of highly trained wildlife educators. These award-winning educational programs can have an impact that lasts a lifetime as kids see their own unique place in the natural world.

Adults also have the opportunity to volunteer with any of the programs. With a 5:1 or 4:1 child to adult ratio, each participant gets plenty of direct instruction and one on one time in addition to their hands-on experience around the farm or in local Morsches Park, which is highly family-friendly.

Let's take a closer look at the available programs:

  • Farm & Forest School
The signature Farm & Forest School is an outdoor nature immersion program focused on giving kids the opportunity to learn naturally. It includes activities such as exploring outdoors, tracking local wildlife, studying plants and animals, honing awareness of nature, storytelling, journaling, and learning more about edible and medicinal plants. Kids will even learn some camping and wilderness skills.

  • Bloom Health Initiative
The popular Bloom Health Initiative is rooted in education about growing food within the local community. This urban agricultural program takes place year-round, focusing on at-risk or underserved youth. They will grow healthy food from seed to harvest, learning about soil science and organic growing methods, as well as how to cook with the vegetables they helped to grow.

  • Seasonal Programs
An extraordinary number of seasonal programs are available at Giving Gardens. Some of them last all season long. Many are free, and all are welcoming to families. Events like Gather at the Garden, Knife and Tool Safety Skills, Ice Cream Social Fundraiser, Kids' Garden Club, and much more will enrich any child's natural education.

  • Annual Plant Giveaway
The Annual Plant Giveaway generally takes place in May and allows pre-registration for interested guests. Free garden plants are given away to members of the community based on what the Farm cultivated that year. The 2022 Annual Plant Giveaway will take a new form, giving away 100 plants in sets of six to the first 100 people to register. There will also be fundraising and a garden tour.

  • Little Willows (Caregiver and Me)
These classes are unique at the Giving Gardens because they are specially designed for children and their adult caregivers. They will have the opportunity to explore the outdoors together and enjoy child-led play. Supportiveness and inclusivity are keys to the Little Willows vision.
