- Check Local Laws and Regulations
Most municipalities have laws and regulations related to garage sales. Make sure you get a copy of these regulations before you start planning your sale so you can ensure you're in compliance.
For example, in Mokena which is close to our New Lenox office, residents need to obtain a permit before hosting a garage sale. The sale can only take place between 9 am and 8 pm, and it cannot last more than 3 days. Residents are only permitted to have two garage sales per year, and signs must be removed when the sale ends. - Choose Your Date Wisely
You'll make more sales if you host your garage sale on the weekend. Most people hold their sales on Saturday and Sunday, but you should consider opening Friday night, too. This gives people with busy weekends a chance to stop and shop on their way home from work. You may attract some weekend workers, too.
Often, the first weekend of the month is the best time for a garage sale. People have more discretionary income at the beginning of the month.
- Set Your Prices Low
It's tempting to ask more for your items because you want to earn more money. However, if you price your items too high, you won't sell much. Then, you'll need to find something else to do with the clutter before you move.
Since your primary goal is to get rid of things, you're better off pricing items a little lower so you can count on them selling. Be willing to negotiate when buyers make offers, too.
- Advertise Your Sale
You'll get some drive-up traffic at the average garage sale. However, if you really want a busy garage sale, you need to advertise. Tell your neighbors, and ask them to spread the word. You can invite them to bring some of their own items to sell, too.
Post signs in local stores that have bulletin boards. Post on some social media pages, too. Look for your community or village's social media account, and post an advertisement there. Some communities even have dedicated pages just for garage sales and yard sales.
- Bundle Smaller Items
If you have larger quantities of some small items, such as DVDs or clothes, consider selling them in batches. You'll get rid of more things this way. For example, you could offer 4 DVDs for $5. Or, you could let people fill a bag with clothing for $10.
