Menominee Lighthouse

Menominee is known for its beautiful location along Lake Michigan. People who move here often do so because they love the water and all that it has to offer. One waterfront attraction that's particularly worth visiting is the Menominee North Pier Lighthouse. Whether you're new to the area or are still looking at Menominee homes for sale, here are the key things to know about this local gem.

  • Location
To understand the significance of the Menominee North Pier Lighthouse's location, it's helpful to first understand a little about the region's history. The Menominee River, which empties into Lake Michigan, was once an important water route for the transportation of lumber. As such, the lighthouse was built near the point where the Menominee River meets Lake Michigan. This allowed the ships' captains to see clearly as they entered or exited the narrow waterway.

The light is located just north of the river's mouth. You can see it from Green Bay and from Harbor Drive, which runs along the coast to the boat ramp. If you want to visit the lighthouse, the best place to park is in the lot right at the end of Harbor Drive, near the boat ramp. You can then walk the pier to the lighthouse.

  • Hours and Operation
While you can sit and admire the lighthouse anytime, our Menominee real estate agents highly recommend taking a tour. They are held Thursdays and Fridays between 12 pm and 3 pm, Saturdays from 12 pm - 6 pm, and Sundays from 1 pm - 4 pm.

If you take a tour, you'll be able to see the inside of the lighthouse and learn how it operates. The lighthouse was restored between 2016 and 2018, and public tours have been offered since 2018.

  • The Construction
The Menominee Lighthouse is distinct because of its bright red tower. The base of the light is stark white, which creates a distinct contrast with the red. The white portion of the light is actually made from concrete blocks. This was part of an upgrade made to the original structure in the 1920s.

  • The History
You'll learn the full history of the Menominee North Pier Lighthouse if you take a tour of the structure, but it's nice to have some background beforehand. The lighthouse was built in 1877. At first, it was just a simple, cast iron tower. A couple of years later, a walkway was extended to the light. And in 1906, a dwelling was built for the keeper of the lighthouse.

The lighthouse was still in use in the 1970s, and at this time, it was automated. However, by 2005, the lighthouse was determined to no longer be necessary. As such, the Coast Guard transferred the light to the City of Menominee in 2008. It took the city some time to collect funds to refurnish the lighthouse, but an anonymous donor provided money for the restoration in 2016. Now, the lighthouse has become a symbol of Menominee and a favorite attraction among locals and tourists alike.

Whether you recently moved to Menominee or are still thinking of moving here, we hope you enjoy your time at the lighthouse. It's an important part of our city's history and a lovely sight to see on the water. Feel free to contact us if you need help with your local home search.
