Brokaw Movie House

Small-town charm is in no short supply in Angola, Indiana. Angola's downtown is a picture-perfect slice of Americana, its streets lined with brick buildings and glass-windowed storefronts that are still lively and vibrant, even though they appear virtually unchanged since the mid-20th century.

The Brokaw Movie House is a fixture of that downtown district. It's been a staple of the Public Square in the heart of Angola for more than 90 years, and it remains the best place in town to catch a movie.

The holidays are a great time to pay a visit to the Brokaw Movie House, and our downtown district is especially charming when it is lit up with festive lights among the falling snow. Let our Angola real estate agents be your guides to the Brokaw Movie House this season!

History of the Brokaw Movie House

From the moment you see the Brokaw Movie House's vintage marquee sign, you know you're about to experience something special. The art deco exterior looks the same as it did when the movie house opened its doors.

The Brokaw Movie House was opened to the public in 1930. The first film to grace its screen was the musical comedy, The Smiling Lieutenant, and patrons paid a whopping 50¢ each for tickets!

The designer of the Brokaw Movie House was A.M. Strauss, an architect best known for designing the Embassy Theatre in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

In 1990, the Brokaw Movie House was divided into two screens, originally designed with a single-screen layout. The ability to show two movies instead of one, no doubt helped it survive a period when smaller movie houses around the country struggled to keep their doors open.

Another unique fact about the Brokaw is that it's the oldest surviving movie house in Angola, but it wasn't always the only one! For decades, the Brokaw stood two doors down from the Strand Theatre, which opened in 1914 and closed in 2016.

Experience the Brokaw Movie House

The Brokaw Movie House is located at 200 N Public Square, in the very center of Downtown Angola, and within walking distance of many Angola homes for sale. It's a vibrant area of town that includes some of Angola's best coffee shops, eateries, and boutiques.

The Brokaw currently has two movie screens that are equipped with digital projectors and are always showing the best new releases. The surround sound system is top-of-the-line, and modern leather high-back chairs are plush and comfy.

Watching a film on the big screen with spectacular sound in such a historical setting is simply a great experience. The theater was most recently renovated in 2014, with the specific intention of modernizing the movie-watching experience while emphasizing the unique, original art deco atmosphere of the Brokaw Movie House.

The concession stand offers all the classic theater fare you would expect, from hot dogs and nachos to hot buttered popcorn. Pizzas, flatbreads, and other rotating specials are also served, and the theaters are equipped with table seating so you can enjoy your meal while you watch your film.
